Other teens get jobs to save up for college or to fund other personal expenses.
Getting your teen to understand the importance of getting a job is more critical now than in decades past. In the s and early '90s, 40 to 50 percent of teenagers held jobs, whereas in May , only 25 percent of to year-olds were employed, according to a report from Fox Business. Part of this significant decrease in teenage employment is because of a consistently weak job market; however, a lack of parental encouragement also might be a factor. Parents who pay for their teenager's cell phone, car and gas can request that their teen get a job to help with a portion of the cost. Once a teen begins earning money and paying for her own things, she'll realize the amount of time and effort she has to devote to her job in order to earn enough to cover the bills. This scenario builds an appreciation for the value of money and encourages responsible money management. Pursuing or expecting a job opportunity and then failing to get it teaches a teen resilience.
